Learning from Private Car Instructor and Learning from School are 2 routes for getting your driving license in Singapore. In this blogpost, I will be explaining the process for converting from Private Car Learner to School Learner or School Car Learner to Private Learner.
Transferable
PDL, BTT, FTT and simulator result are stored in TP database which can be accessed by all schools. Thus, they can be transferred across schools (CDC, SSDC and BBDC) and private instructors. Eye test result is only transferable within the same school as the eye test result are store individual in the school that you took your eye test.
Converting from Private Car Learner to School
To convert from private car learner to school learner, you have to create a CDC school account and pay the school fee which include all the theory lesson even if you have already passed BTT and FTT. After that, you will have both school and private account. I will recommend that you do not close your private learner account so that you have the flexibility to learn from both private and school. Unless you really need the money from private learner account, then you should not close it until you obtained your license.
Unfortunately, private learner who converted to school will still have to restart from lesson 1 in school. However, it is possible for you to progress thru the lesson modules much faster provided that you inform the school instructor before every lesson that you were a private learner before. You also need to tell them to clear your lesson faster and if you can convincing demonstrate your driving skill to instructor, they might clear you faster. In this case, it is possible to book Traffic police test after 7-15 lessons.
Converting from School to Private Car Learner
To convert to private car learner, you will have to find your own private instructor and then open a private learner account. The cheapest method is to book an appointment with CDC and get only the pure private learner account. Private car instructor are much more flexible and if you are confident, you can take your traffic police test as long as your private instructor is happy with your skill. You should also try to keep both account so that you have the flexibility to switch between private and school. Please also remember to cancel all your school lesson
Getting back the money inside the account
To get back the money inside the other account, you will have to close the account first before getting back the refund. Unless you have urgently need the money inside, i will advise not to close the account. This is because when you have both private and school account, you can have the option of going for both at the same anytime.
